Paying for OpenRouter

How to top up OpenRouter from Russia, and what it costs

Not with a Russian card or SBP (Russia's Faster Payments System). OpenRouter doesn't accept them, and according to user reports, since May 2026 it has also been declining payments from accounts with a Russian location.

OpenRouter itself charges 5.5% on credit purchases on the Standard plan and 8% on Business. It makes nothing on model prices: the vendor's price is passed through as is.

Every workaround adds its own percentage. Below are a calculator for your amount and a breakdown of four methods. Our offer is at the end of the page, and you don't have to read that far.

How much reaches your balance

Enter an amount and adjust the rates if you know your own. The calculation is in rubles: the exchange rate scales every row equally and doesn't change the comparison.

Your own non-Russian card4,725 ₽5.5% OpenRouter fee, no bank conversion−275 ₽
Crypto via P2P4,654 ₽1.5% spread + 5.5% OpenRouter fee−346 ₽
Reseller4,250 ₽15% to the reseller, OpenRouter's fee included−750 ₽
AltRouter, Russian card or SBP5,000 ₽at the USDT/RUB rate, nothing added on topno loss

On the right: how many rubles of the amount end up as credits on the balance. A foreign card's currency conversion fee is not included: banks rarely publish it. In the AltRouter row the credits sit on our balance, not on OpenRouter's.

What OpenRouter itself charges

OpenRouter publishes these terms itself, so you can open them and check.

Four methods and what each adds on top

Reseller and card-issuer rates change faster than reviews get published, so below are ranges, not a price list. Check the rate at the time of payment.

Your own non-Russian card

The cheapest route if you already have one: OpenRouter's 5.5% plus your bank's currency conversion. If the account has a Russian location, the payment can be declined even with a foreign card.

A card issued for the purpose

A card from a bank in Kazakhstan, Armenia or Georgia is opened through an intermediary. By our data as of September 2026, that is 12,000–15,000 rubles up front plus an annual fee. On top of that come the same OpenRouter fee and the cost of funding the card from Russia. It only pays off at a regular volume: with top-ups of 5,000 ₽, issuing the card costs more than the first two payments.

Crypto

The chain goes like this: rubles, then USDT on P2P at a spread to the market rate, usually 0.5–2%, then 5.5% on OpenRouter's side. From a wallet you already have, this is usually cheaper than a reseller. For a one-off urgent top-up, usually not. OpenRouter does not refund crypto top-ups.

A reseller or marketplace

The most popular route: a reseller takes your rubles and puts credits on your account. Public rates are rare, and the published ones are tiered: the smaller the amount, the higher the percentage. You can enter your own rate in the calculator above.

Almost every Russian-language article on how to pay for OpenRouter is written by the resellers themselves. The numbers in them are advertising, not measurements.

What usually gets left out of the math

  • Credits can expire. OpenRouter may void them one year after purchase. Depositing a year's worth to pay a reseller less often is risky.
  • Crypto can't be refunded. If you get the amount wrong on a crypto top-up, it stays on the balance.
  • A method can stop working. The balance runs out under load, and you end up hunting for a new method at the worst possible moment, with a 402 in production.
  • Time. Every top-up is a few minutes of manual work, and an hour if the method has stopped working.

Fees over a year

A one-off thousand rubles won't ruin anyone, so do the math on a yearly volume.

Monthly spend10% rate20% rate
5,000 ₽6,000 ₽ a year12,000 ₽ a year
15,000 ₽18,000 ₽ a year36,000 ₽ a year
50,000 ₽60,000 ₽ a year120,000 ₽ a year

That money doesn't pay for models: it pays for getting the payment across the border.

When paying extra makes sense

  • You depend on models we don't have: open weights, niche vendors, a specific version. If your product is built on such a model, the fee is cheaper than a rewrite.
  • You need embeddings, reranking, TTS/STT or batch.
  • Your spend is small. At $10 a month, 10% is a dollar.
  • Moving right now costs more. If a release is around the corner, paying and coming back to the question in a month can be the smarter call.

In these cases, pick a method with the calculator above.

When you don't need to top up OpenRouter

The fee is the price of moving money across the border. Take that payment out, and along with the fee goes the risk that your payment method stops working.

AltRouter is a Russian gateway with the same OpenAI-compatible API to 122 models. You top up the balance with a Russian bank card, via SBP or with crypto. Rubles are converted to dollars at the market USDT/RUB rate with no fee on top, and you see the ruble amount before you pay. Packages from $15, and $1 for testing for a confirmed Telegram account.

The second difference is the model price. OpenRouter passes the vendor's price through; ours is below it: 10–29% lower on text models.

Code moves over by swapping the URL and the key, and model IDs in OpenRouter format work too. A detailed comparison and code samples: an OpenRouter alternative for Russia.

What we don't have

  • Hundreds of models. We have 122 models, and almost no open-weight ones.
  • Embeddings, reranking, TTS/STT and batch.
  • Free models. Instead, $1 for a confirmed Telegram account.
