OpenRouter alternative

An OpenRouter alternative for Russia: the same API, prices below official

AltRouter is an OpenAI-compatible gateway to 122 models: GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, plus image and video models. Moving from OpenRouter takes a few minutes: in your code you change the base URL and the key.

There are two differences, and both are about money. Payment: a Russian bank card, SBP (Russia's Faster Payments System) or crypto. Price: below the official list prices of OpenAI, Anthropic and Google - 10–29% off on text models, with the official price shown next to ours.

OpenRouter details checked against its Pricing and FAQ pages on October 27, 2026.

What's wrong with OpenRouter from Russia

OpenRouter's API hasn't gone anywhere; the trouble is paying for it. It does not accept Russian cards or SBP, and according to user reports, since May 2026 it has been declining payments from accounts with a Russian location. Over the summer users also started reporting 403 errors on requests from Russia. There has been no official announcement, so these are user reports, not a confirmed fact.

In practice your integration keeps working while there is money on the balance. Once it runs out, the API will answer 402, most likely under load. From there you have two options: top up through a reseller, or take the cross-border payment out of the chain. We worked out the cost of the first option separately: what it costs to top up OpenRouter from Russia. The second one is described below.

A markup? We give a discount

The first question people ask any Russian gateway: what's your markup over OpenRouter? Usually it is a percentage on top: the reseller pays OpenRouter's fee and adds its own margin.

OpenRouter doesn't make money on the models themselves. It passes the vendor's price through as is and charges 5.5% when you buy credits on the Standard plan (8% on Business).

We price down from the vendor's official price. Each model has its own discount: 10 to 29% on text models, up to 64% across the catalog. The official price is shown struck through in the table, so you can check it on the vendor's site.

Moving your code: change the URL and the key

The protocol is the same, so request structure, response parsing, streaming and tool calling stay as they were. The same request in Python, JavaScript and cURL:

PythonJavaScriptcURL
from openai import OpenAI

client = OpenAI(
    base_url="https://api.altrouter.ai/v1",
    api_key="ar-...",
)

resp = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="claude-sonnet-5.5",
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Hello!"}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)

Model IDs. OpenRouter's carry a vendor prefix, ours don't: anthropic/claude-sonnet-4.5 is claude-sonnet-4-5 here. You don't have to rewrite them: we strip the prefix ourselves, and the request finds the same model. If a model isn't in the catalog, the 404 response suggests the three cheapest replacements. GET /v1/models returns the full list with prices.

Claude Code and the Anthropic SDK

Besides the OpenAI format we have an Anthropic-compatible /v1/messages: Claude Code and the Anthropic SDK connect to the same catalog and balance. For Claude Code three variables are enough:

Shell
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.altrouter.ai
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=ar-...
export ANTHROPIC_MODEL=claude-sonnet-5.5
claude

What to check before switching production

  1. Streaming on a real prompt, not on "Hello": this is where OpenAI compatibility breaks most often.
  2. Tool calling, if you use it.
  3. The model field in the response: it should match the one you requested. A swap to a cheaper model shows up in a single request.
  4. The log: find your request and check the model, the tokens and the amount charged.
  5. Latency at your context size.

This check takes about fifteen minutes and less than a dollar of the $1 welcome credit.

Payment and spend control

  • Russian bank card or SBP - in one payment form, up to 20,000 ₽ per payment.
  • Crypto - for larger amounts, or if you simply prefer it.
  • Exchange rate - the market USDT/RUB rate; you see the ruble amount before you pay. Packages from $15.
  • $1 for testing for a confirmed Telegram account, once per person. No card needs to be linked.

Keeping the money on the balance under control:

  • a spending cap on each key - per day, per month or for all time;
  • a requests-per-minute limit per key;
  • a separate key for each service or teammate, with spend visible for each one;
  • a log of every call with the model, tokens and amount charged, kept for a year;
  • if a provider fails, the request goes to a backup where one exists.

What we don't have

  • Hundreds of models. We have 122 models, and almost no open-weight ones.
  • Embeddings, reranking, TTS/STT and batch. Only text, images and video.
  • Free models. Instead, $1 for a confirmed Telegram account.

If any of this applies to you, stay on OpenRouter: it's cheaper than migrating.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an OpenRouter alternative in Russia?

Yes, more than one: Russian gateways accept requests in the OpenAI format and pass them on to the vendor. They differ in payment options, price, catalog, and whether they offer an Anthropic-compatible /v1/messages. AltRouter is a gateway to 122 models that takes Russian bank cards, SBP and crypto, with prices below the vendors' official list prices.

What is your markup over OpenRouter?

There is no markup: our price is a discount off the vendor's official price. Text models are 10 to 29% off, and up to 64% across the catalog. OpenRouter itself passes the vendor's price through as is and charges 5.5% when you buy credits on the Standard plan.

All models: official price vs ours
Does OpenRouter work in Russia in 2026?

An existing key keeps working as long as there is money on the balance. OpenRouter does not accept Russian cards or SBP, and according to user reports, since May 2026 it has been declining payments from accounts with a Russian location. Over the summer users also began reporting 403 errors on requests from Russia, but there has been no official statement about it.

Why OpenRouter returns 403 and what to do
Do I need to rewrite my code to switch from OpenRouter?

No. Both services expose an OpenAI-compatible API, so you change base_url and the key. Model IDs can stay in OpenRouter format: a vendor prefix such as anthropic/ is stripped, and the request finds the same model. Streaming, tool calling and structured outputs work as before.

Quickstart: base_url, key and the first request
Does Claude Code work through AltRouter?

Yes. We have an Anthropic-compatible /v1/messages endpoint, which is what Claude Code calls. Set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=https://api.altrouter.ai, put your AltRouter key in ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN and the model in ANTHROPIC_MODEL - requests go through us and are charged to the same balance.

Claude Code in Russia: how to connect it
Do you have DeepSeek?

Yes: DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and DeepSeek V4 Pro. In total the catalog has 122 models from 18 vendors, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, DeepSeek, Moonshot AI and Alibaba.

All vendors in the catalog
How do I top up my balance?

With a Russian bank card, via SBP or with crypto. Rubles are converted to dollars at the market USDT/RUB rate, and you see the ruble amount before you pay. Packages start at $15, and confirming your Telegram adds $1 to the balance for testing.

How to get a key and top up
Can I cap spending per API key?

Yes. Each key can have a spending cap per day, per month or for all time, plus a separate requests-per-minute limit. If a key leaks, the loss cannot exceed that cap.
